Feature Story

My Most Ambitious Project Yet.

Last week, I challenged myself creatively — not only as a music producer, but as a visual creative too.

In case you didn’t know, I started a YouTube channel which is curated collection of videos for musicians, producers, photographers, and visual creatives.

Basically, it’s an extension of this newsletter where I can do a deeper dive on some of the topics I cover here.

This week, I released episode 1 of a series that I am calling “One Man Band”, where I reimagine and record a song that I love. But, this is for YouTube, and we all go to YouTube for video, not audio.

So, flexing the visual creative muscle, I am also shooting a cinematic music video to go with the song.

Yep, you heard correct…full mix AND music video.

The Process

This week’s song has been on my mind a lot lately. It is a dark, emotional country song called “the devil” by Stephen Wilson Jr.

This song doesn’t have a whole lot going on arrangement wise, so at first I was going to make it a bit heavier. However, my inner producer said “serve the song”, and so I decided to stay pretty true to the original, while giving it a little bit of the rock flair that I’m known for with some electric guitar leads.

For the video, I ended up going a completely different direction than intended. With a full shot list in hand, I went outside to shoot and was greeted with torrential downpour. Perhaps this was a blessing, because at some point, I decided to say “fck it”. Rain was the perfect setting for a song like this, and I think the shots came out great to add even more emotion to an already awesome song.

Anything to get the shot right?

I am really proud of this video. It pushed me as a creative, an audio engineer, and really encompasses who I am at my core as a creator.
